4 held for bank robbery bid

Following the interrogation of two persons arrested from Mohali recently, the Amritsar (Rural) police today nabbed four of their accomplices for allegedly attempting a bank robbery at Dharad village.

They have been identified as Deepak Singh, alias Dipu, and Amritpal Singh, alias Sajan, both residents of Jandiala Guru, Harpreet Singh, alias Ajay, of Railpur Kalan village and Jagtar Singh, alias Jagga, of Seron village.

The police have seized two pistols, one of .32 bore and other of .315 bore, besides two sharp-edged weapons from them.

On the interrogation of notorious gangsters Shubham Singh and Saraj Singh Mintoo, wanted in the killing of Hindu Sangharsh Sena leader Vipin Sharma, the police arrested Sukhwinder Singh, alias Raju, of Chatiwind here and Sukhpal Singh, alias Monu, of Balechak village, from Mohali where they had been residing in a flat. Sukhwinder was an accomplice of Mintoo and Shubham Singh.

During their interrogation, the police got the names of these four suspects.

On a tip-off, the police nabbed them from Dharad village where they were planning to loot a Oriental Bank of Commerce branch. However, their fifth accomplice, identified as Gurpreet Singh of Manawala, managed to escape. A case under Sections 399 and 402 of the IPC and Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act was registered against them.

Parmpal Singh, SSP, Amritsar (Rural), said Deepak used to shelter gangsters and provide vehicles to them while they were on the run after committing crime. Amritpal Singh, who is a son of a former Municipal Committee member, was involved in drug peddling. Harpreet Singh had recently come out of jail on bail in an NDPS case. He is an accomplice of Shubham Singh.
