NK Sharma promises more development works, better education facilities

Zirakpur, January 29
Born and brought up in Lohgarh village, the 47-year-old SAD-BJP candidate from Dera Bassi seat, NK Sharma, is once again in fray, and eyeing for his second consecutive win as an MLA in the coming Assembly elections scheduled to be held on February 4.
Realtor-cum-politician Sharma is pitted against AAP’s choice Bibi Sarabjit Kaur, wife of late Capt Kanwaljit Singh, and Congress candidate Deepinder Singh Dhillon.
A protégé of late SAD leader Capt Kanwaljit Singh, Sharma started his political journey as sarpanch of Logharh village in Zirakpur. He became municipal councillor and president of the Zirakpur Municipal Council in 2003. Sharma once again became the president of the Zirakpur Municipal Council in 2008. Sharma resigned from the post and contested elections for MLA in 2012 on a SAD ticket.
SAD candidate Sharma won the Dera Bassi Assembly seat by defeating Congress rebel and independent candidate Deepinder Singh Dhillon with a margin of 12,037 votes. In total, 1,41,644 votes were polled, out of which Sharma polled 63,285 votes while his nearest rival Dhillon polled 51,248 votes. The sitting MLA is relying on his development card to script history by staging a comeback from the constituency. He claimed that a total of Rs 1,600 crore had been spent on the development of the Dera Bassi constituency.
Construction of a Dera Bassi flyover at the cost of Rs 90 crore, inauguration of rural water supply scheme amounting to Rs 1.95 crore at Bhankarpur village, construction of a causeway at the cost of Rs 3.21 crore, getting grants worth 3.80 crore sanctioned for the construction of sports stadium etc. in his constituency, Sharma contributes as his major achievements during his stint as an MLA.
However, his rivals accuse him of ignoring the areas. They claim one would find more foundation stones and less development works.
He said the opposition leaders in the region had nothing else to say except to condemn him on unnecessary issues. People of the region have already witnessed his way of working and development has been done in the constituency in the SAD-BJP alliance government.
He has been reaching out to voters in the constituency seeking votes and promised them to carry out more development works, including upgrade of education sector, roads connectivity etc. if he gets elected.
The electorate in the constituency seems more or less satisfied with MLA’s performance. They opine that the area has seen more development under him as compared to previous years. They also feel that the MLA is easily accessible and responsive.
