TISS shuts Hyderabad institute after protests
Hyderabad, July 15
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) here has shut its prestigious institution sine die after a prolonged agitation by students.
All academic activities on its Hyderabad campus have been suspended indefinitely and the students have been told to vacate the campus by tonight. The deputy director of TISS, Vindhya, attributed the management’s decision to the protest by students.
The students have been on hunger strike, protesting the change in hostel and mess fee charges. They even denied entry to the TISS staff to the campus. Talks ended with no headway as both sides stuck to a “no-compromise” attitude.
The Tata management insisted the students end their agitation to hold further talks but when they refused, the administration suspended academic activity indefinitely. The management said the campus would reopen only once normalcy was restored. — TNS
