MS Randhawa’s wife passes away at 101

Chandigarh, February 20

Iqbal Kaur Randhawa, wife of Chandigarh’s first Chief Commissioner late Dr MS Randhawa, passed away at a private hospital here yesterday after a brief illnesses. She was 101.

She is survived by a son and two daughters. Her cremation was held at the Sector 25 crematorium today. The funeral pyre was lit by son Jatinder Singh Randhawa and grandsons Ranjit Singh, Satinder Singh and Sajit Singh. 

Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, in his condolence message, described Iqbal Kaur as a pillar of strength and inspiration for Dr Randhawa, who played a pivotal role in bringing the green revolution to Punjab by establishing the prestigious Punjab Agricultural University at Ludhiana. He was also instrumental in developing Chandigarh as the City Beautiful, besides promoting art and culture.

Capt Amarinder, in the message, prayed for strength to the bereaved family, relatives and friends and for peace to the departed soul.

On behalf of the Chief Minister, Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu paid homage by laying a wreath. DGPs Suresh Arora and Hardeep Dhillon and Punjab Kala Parishad Chairman Surjit Patar also paid their last respects.

Sidhu said Iqbal Kaur inspired Dr Randhawa to accomplish great deeds, and that her contribution to her husband’s success could never be forgotten. “She was an iron lady, always adhered to high moral values, lived a simple life and inculcated ethical values in her family members,” said Sidhu. — TNS
