IPS officer accuses Mulayam of threatening him
Lucknow, July 11
An IG-rank officer has accused former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav of threatening to harm him if he failed “to mend his ways”.
Amitabh Thakur, IG Civil Defence, who has been assisting his wife — RTI activist Nutan Thakur — raise social issues, released an audiotape on Friday containing a voice threatening him. The voice in the tape, he claimed, belonged to Yadav.
"At around 4.45 pm, a phone came from Mulayam Singh's residence and he talked to me. He told me that whatever had happened in Jasrana, Firozabad, where I had been assaulted by one of his relative and an MLA in 2006, much harsher things will happen to me if I don't 'mend my ways'. I felt I should take a stand. Therefore, I gave a complaint against SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav," Thakur said on Friday.
Thakur’s wife Nutan claimed her police complaint against Mines Minister Gayatri Pajapati could have prompted the threat.
She also claimed that Hazratganj police station SHO Vijaymal Yadav first refused to register a complaint when her husband approached him, only relenting after much persuasion.
Lucknow Senior Police Superintendent Rajesh Pandey said they police would first verify if the tape was doctored.
While Mulayam was not immediately available for comments, an SP leader dismissed the charge.
"I have not heard the audio but such an allegation appears to be doctored. He (Mulayam) is such a senior leader. I know him for past 30 years...He could never threaten anyone," SP leader CP Rai said. — PTI
