New Delhi, February 3

Former CBI Director Joginder Singh passed away today after prolonged illness, family sources said here. He was 77. His mortal remains would be cremated at 1 pm tomorrow at Lodhi crematorium. 

Singh was replaced as the CBI chief in 1997 and moved to the Home Ministry as a Special Secretary. In his 11-month tenure as the Director in 1996-97, the IPS officer was under constant attack from politicians, judiciary, executives and the media.

Before joining the CBI, he served, among other posts, as the Superintendent of Police in Bihar; DIG, IG, Director of Youth Services and Special Home Secretary in Karnataka; Director, Ministry of Commerce; Director General, Narcotics Control Bureau and Director General, ITBP. 

Singh also authored various inspirational books, including ‘Make a Way Where There is None’, ’50 Days to Top’, ‘Inside CBI’, ‘Police Ke Kahani Meri Zabani’. He was known for his articles, features and columns on the subjects of terrorism, corruption and good governance, which were carried in various national dailies. He also handled terrorism and security issues as IG, CRP, both in Punjab and Kashmir for around five years.

He was conferred many awards, including Panth Rattan, Delhi Rattan, Punjabian Di Shan, Millennium Sikh Gold Award and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sadbhavana Award. — TNS
