New Delhi: Senior Indian Forest Service officer Ramesh Pandey has been selected for the prestigious Asia Environmental Enforcement Award by the United Nations Environment Programme. The 1996-batch IFS officer, posted as Chief Conservator Forests in Lucknow and Secretary, UP State Bio-diversity Board, is known for his investigation and intelligence gathering on poachers. Pandey will receive the award on November 13 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok.  PTI

Coins and FDs, Mumbai beggar dies rich 

Mumbai: The police inquiring about a beggar found dead by railway tracks here stumbled upon a sackful of coins totalling Rs 1.75 lakh, certificates of fixed deposits of Rs 8.77 lakh and Rs 96,000 in bank savings accounts. Biradichand Pannaramji Azad (82), who hailed from Rajasthan, lived in a rundown tarpaulin-topped shanty near a drain between Govandi and Mankhurd stations on the Harbour corridor of the Central Railway's suburban network, the official said. Indian-origin Singapore judge joins Brunei SC 

Singapore: An Indian-origin Singaporean judge has been sworn in by Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah as a judicial commissioner of the Supreme Court of the sultanate, a media report said on Monday. Kannan Ramesh’s appointment is for a two-year period and the 54-year-old Justice will continue to hold his position as a full-time judge of the Supreme Court of Singapore. PTI

NRI marriage Bill referred to Parliament standing panel

New Delhi: The Registration of Marriage of Non-Resident Indian Bill, 2019,  which makes it mandatory for NRI men to register their marriage within 30 days of getting married, has been referred to Parliament's standing committee on external affairs. The Bill empowers passport authorities to impound or revoke passports of NRIs who fail to comply with it. PTI
