The Youth Akali Dal, along with various traders associations, staged a protest against the Congress government over unscheduled power cuts, false promises of providing power at Rs 5 per unit to the industry and high power tariff in the state.

During the protest outside the railway station here, the protesters distributed hand fans (pakhis) to public and raised slogans against the government.

Gurdeep Singh Gosha, district president of Youth Akali Dal, and Beopar Mandal leader Sunil Mehra said the long unscheduled power cuts were causing problems to everyone in the state, including the traders.

“The Congress government had promised to provide electricity at Rs 5 per unit to the industry, but for the past two years, the promise has not been fulfilled,” they said.

They further said Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had no concern about the problems being faced by the people of Punjab and Power Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu had not even assumed charge of his department (Power) till date.

Former minister and senior BJP leader Satpal Gosian, Arvinder Singh Makkar, Jaspal Singh Bunty, Sanjeev Chaudhary, Varun Malhotra, Manpreet Singh Bunty and Jagjit Singh said the electricity prices in Punjab were too high in comparison to other states. The government should slash the prices and provide uninterrupted power supply, they added.
