People visiting Ludhiana Railway Station continue to park their vehicles in no-parking areas. Though there is a proper parking lot at the station, most visitors park their vehicles in no-parking areas, thus causing a lot of inconvenience to others.
During a visit to the railway station, it was found that many cars, two-wheelers and other vehicles were parked in the no-parking zones. Though the railway authorities have installed boards that warn against parking in these areas, most visitors park their vehicles there to avoid parking fee.
“The people who visit the railway station for a short time often park their vehicles in no-parking areas. When we try to prevent them from doing so, they start fighting with us,” said Bablu, an employee of the parking contractor at the railway station.
There is a provision for imposing a fine on those parking their vehicles in the no-parking areas. According to sources, one can be fined for parking a car (Rs 590) or a two-wheeler (Rs 118) in a no-parking area at the railway station. The responsibility of preventing the public from parking vehicles in no-parking zones lies with the Government Railway Police. The practice continues despite many GRP personnel having been deployed at the station.
Ludhiana Railway Station Superintendent RS Salaria said the GRP employees regularly inspect the premises. “People shall understand that parking vehicles in no-parking areas not only causes problems for others but also put vehicles at the risk of being stolen. We will step up monitoring to check the practice,” he said.
