The Council of Architecture (COA), Government of India, has given its nod to start BArch, a five-year programme in architecture with 40 seats, at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College (GNDEC) from session 2019-20.

The programme would help provide trained manpower to the city, which is witnessing a rapid infrastructural development under the Smart City Mission.

The Principal, Dr Sehijpal Singh, said course was the need of the hour, especially for Ludhiana-based students who had to go to other cities to obtain a degree in the field of architecture. Sanjay Goel, Chairman of Indian Institute of Architects, Punjab Chapter, and director of Ludhiana Smart City Limited congratulated the Nankana Sahib Education Trust and GNDEC for taking a lead in opening the first architecture college in the city. Officials from Indian Institute of Architects, Ludhiana, and the local architect fraternity also extended wishes for the upcoming college.

Harsharan Singh, a city-based senior architect, said the GNDEC with a legacy of more than 60 years should be the right place for budding architects. He assured the college authorities of all support and help from the local architect associations and organisations to make the program successful.

“The active support from a well established civil engineering department and the testing and consultancy cell of GNDEC will help students to acquire professional skills during their study in the college,” said the Head of Department of Civil Engineering, Dr HS Rai.
