‘Media largely influences democracy, social system’

Office-bearers and activists of various organisations vowed to fight for rights of journalists. A workshop was held at the GHG Khalsa College, Sudhar.
Ram Gopal Raikoti presided over the event while Raikot Deputy Superintendent of Police Gurmit Singh Tejey and Ludhiana DPRO Prabhdeep Singh Nathowal were the guests of honour.
Former registrar of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences Faridkot Pyare Lal Garg was the keynote speaker.
Speakers, including Santokh Singh Gill, Sushil Kumar, Mandeep Singh, Parveen Aggarwal, Amit Passi, Dr Sohan Singh and principal Dr Swaran Singh Deol among others regretted that writers and journalists were passing through dark phase.
“Despite being one of the pillars of democracy, freedom of media has deteriorated,” said Garg.
Swaran Singh Deol said the press yields power which directly as well as indirectly influences democracy and social system. Raikoti pointed out that it was media which used to influence politics but the scenario has changed nowadays.
Mandeep Singh and Dr HS Brar expressed concerns over lethal attacks on journalists for daring to bring out the real picture. A magazine “Aapsi Saanjh” was released.
