The first rain of the season, which lashed the region last night, played havoc in Jagraon city. The rain also exposed the tall claims made by the local administration about its preparation for dealing with the problem of water-logging during the rainy season. All major roads and residential areas of the town were flooded with rainwater following the rain due to which the local residents had to face a lot of problems. Most of the city roads were flooded with rain water. A lot of water had accumulated on various city roads as well as streets of different residential areas due to poor drainage arrangements. Areas including the Old Grain Market, Sabzi Mandi Road, Kamal Chowk, Sadan Market and Rani Jhansi Chowk were the worst hit. “The town was flooded with rain water after the rain thus exposing the tall claims of the local municipal council authorities. Had the civic body cleaned the drains properly on time, the situation could have been averted,” said Vikas Kapoor, a shopkeeper at local Old Grain Market. Jagraon Municipal Council president Charanjit Kaur Kalyan denied that the rain water got accumulated due to poor drainage system. “We were not expecting such heavy rain in the pre-monsoon season. Most of the drains were cleaned and it was only due to excessive rain that water got accumulated in some parts of the city,” she said.
