Govt primary school turns the tables

Government schools often grapple with shoddy infrastructure, high dropout rates, poor results and attendance. However, the government primary school at Sukhdev Nagar has turned the tables.

Couple of years ago, the primary school was surrounded by heaps of garbage, there was dearth of infrastructure and students used to sit on floor. All this underwent a drastic change after head teacher Sukhdhir Singh decided to renovate school last year.

The primary school, now features well-furnished classrooms, filtered water system, athletic track, Kabbadi ring, lit boundary wall, floor tiles and sanitised washrooms.

With an overall passing percentage of 80.40, the school has also bagged “A grade” under the “Padho Punjab Padhao Punjab” project. More than 50 students from various private schools took admission in this government school. Till now, Rs 18 lakh has been spent on renovation. The s is currently being maintained by the UBL group.

Colourful walls

Walls of school feature Indian map depicting states, union territories and a rainbow, wherein each colour reflects nomenclature of fruits, weeks and so on. Some of the glass paintings promote campaigns such as “save water”, “save the environment”, and “save girl child”.

Sukhdhir Singh said, “Poorly maintained schools are not student friendly. We painted every wall and window so that school appeals to students and teachers as well. Students pick up fundamental concepts through painting.”

Discipline

Regardless of hailing from poor backgrounds students reach school decked up in blue uniforms. Girls could be seen with two braids and boys with trim hair. Sound of good morning sir or mam reverberates from every classroom.

Environment-friendly

Over 200 saplings have been planted in close vicinity of the school. The garden is well maintained and features herbal plants. Rama Rani, a teacher said, “We celebrate every occasion by planting saplings which generates positive energy.”
