The police have booked five travel agents in two cases for duping residents of over Rs 20 lakh on the pretext of sending them abroad.

On a complaint of Manjit Kaur, a resident of Kohara village, the Model Town police have booked two women travel agents, identified as Amandeep Kaur of Bachitar Nagar and Ratinder Kaur of Gobindpura, Millar Ganj. The complainant has alleged that the agents had promised to send her son, Harman Singh, to Canada through their firm Canam Consultants and in lieu, they had taken Rs 13.73 lakh from her.

When the agents failed to arrange any visa for her son, Manjit told them to return her money, but they refused, alleged the complainant.

A case under Section 420, 120 B and 24 of the Immigration Act has been registered against the suspects on the direction of the ACP, Civil Lines. They are yet to be arrested.

In another case, the Haibowal police have booked travel agent Rajiv Kumar of Friends Colony, Mayank Sharma and Chandan, both based in Vietnam, on a complaint of Gaurav Kumar of Sangam Chowk, Haibowal.

The complainant told the police that the suspects had promised to send him to Canada and in lieu, they had taken Rs 6.5 lakh from him. They failed to arranged any visa for him and when he told them to return his money, they refused, said Gaurav.

The police have registered a case against the suspect.
