This duo started their career in the ad world. They made jingles and background music for ads. This went on for eight years and then one day, from nowhere, things changed. “We got a call from Abbas-Mustan to do a peppy song for Kis Kis Ko Pyaar Karu and we created Dj Bajega To Pappu Nachega. It was Kapil Sharma’s debut in Bollywood and marked our entry too,” tells Mohsin of the music composer duo Javed-Mohsin.
Next they belted out a very catch number Ding-Dang from Munna Michael that crossed a whooping 350 million plus views on YouTube. It proved their ability as music composers and now they waited to bring out something different and Vishesh Films gave them the opportunity to do so.
These music composers are back with their new track Pal in the film Jalebi. It’s a soulful melody rendered by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal. “We had made this tune two years back and were looking for the right banner to and Vishesh Films does justice to its songs like no other,” Javed opens up. Being typecast is not a concern just for actors; it’s something that even music composers have to be wary of. “We didn’t want the industry to tag us as music directors for peppy songs. We can do songs in every genre and Pal gave us the platform to showcase our versatility. Back when a film demanded a foot-tapping number, we did it, and now if there was a situation for something romantic and melodious, we brought out Pal,” says Javed.
There is no denying that Pal has hit all the right notes with the listeners; at least that’s what the 1200 million plus views say. So, what does it take to make a hit song? And pat comes the answer, “It’s a combination of good banner, good stars and good music. Another important requisite is a team of good director and producer. They are the one who extract the best out of any music composer or lyricist”
This duo doesn’t mind getting one song a year as starters. It’s quality that they can’t compromise on. “Our job is not to do a lot of songs but do the best ones. We have been offered a lot of movies but we select only those that do justice to their music. Our focus is quality music. There is a lot of competition in the industry but we aim to outperform ourselves each time,” Mohsin explains.
Talking of the industry, what’s the current trend in music, we ask them. “There was a time when a single composer took care of the whole album. These days, you’ll find multiple composers in one movie. This is brings out healthy competition among composers and promises versatility. It also gives a chance to new composers. So, there are many pros in combining different energies but the only flip side is, it takes long for anyone of us to gain that kind of popularity that music directors got just by doing one good album,” they say.
