All the trappings of jawani
The Jawani Song from Student of the Year 2 is the quintessential Bollywood masala song, which has glamour, sparkle and zest. These factors garnered the song 54 million views on YouTube within two weeks of its release.
Punit Malhotra’s directorial venture stars Tiger Shroff, Annaya Pandey and Tara Sutaria. Pandey marks her debut with the film. Sutaria has acted in TV dramas.
The song featuring the lead actors showcases a string of dance sequences on different sets, all three in resplendent, modern costumes.
The Jawani Song is a remake of the yesteryear song, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, which was part of Narinder Bedi’s film Jawani Deewani (1972). The song was picturised on its leading actors, Jaya Baharduri and Randhir Kapoor. Lyrics were penned by Anand Bakshi, composed by RD Burman and sung by Kishore Kumar.
Musician duo Vishal-Shekhar has retained parts from the original song, while adding their creative spin to align it with the current times. Vishal Dadlani and Payal Dev have lent their voices. Lyrics of the song have been penned by Anvita Dutt. The original makers have been credited in the song-which celebrates their contribution.
The good and bad
The old song’s essence is destroyed as the new version tampers with it. We are facing diminishing originality. However, the new one is a reminder of the original track. The new generation can enjoy it as much as the older one does. — Janvi Rattan Atre, student
Quite a mood changer
It is an energetic song. It is always nice to hear an old melody. It is a party song to which people would like to dance to. It is a mood-changer which has a joyful feel to it. The old composition can’t be compared to, but the new version of the song suits the current times. — Param, music teacher
Youth anthem
It is a good song. I enjoyed watching Tiger’s moves. I believe it can be a youth anthem for teens this summer. — Mitali Dhar, student
On a sad note
It’s surprising how the number of viewers is increasing every second, but it is also downright embarrassing for a musically rich country like ours. For us music is an integral part of everything we do. But when it is reduced to stealing, it kills something deep within. — Arshiya Sharma, student
