Heart in his roots
Jasmine Singh
Bus pucho na, lot of running around,” the Canadian accent is the first thing that strikes about him. “Can’t help it, I am a Punjabi born and brought up in Canada, but I have lived on a good diet of world and Punjabi cinema,” producer Pawan Gill provides us the details. By no measure this young producer should be taken lightly; the man breathes professionalism, brimming with new ideas for cinema.
True dedication
Pawan, who has his roots in Ludhiana, moved back to India in 2005. He then worked as the assistant director for the Bollywood film Neil N Nikki. After working with Yash Raj for five years, Pawan branched out to direct his own films and later produce his first Punjabi film, Mundeyan Ton Bachke Rahin (2014). And now he is all set to roll out Punjabi film Super Singh, starring Diljit Dosanjh and Sonam Bajwa, on June 16. Well, casting Diljit must have been a conscious driven. “Actually no, even though I have known both Anurag Singh and Diljit Dosanjh for 4-5 years in individual capacity; it is Anurag who has worked with Diljit on many films, so casting Diljit was also a personal equation, besides, of course, he is a brilliant actor,” adds Pawan swaying between his English and soft Punjabi, with an accent of course!
“Can’t help it as I said,” he laughs. “But let me tell you that accent has got nothing to do with my work; both Anurag and Diljit known the professionalism that I get to the table, the additions I bring in, so whether it’s French or British, it is more about being thorough with the work.”
Big market
Even though Pawan comes from Canada, he still considers India as a big market. “It is a myth that our big market is overseas; the Indian market has grown after the year 2000 and the audience is really smart. This is the place that we look at as our big market, of course, NRI market does exist too.”
So, will this Super Singh strike a chord with the Punjabi and international market given, that it is a western genre? “This might be a western genre but our Super Singh has all the Punjabi elements intact; better still our Super Singh has Punjabiyat, which I believe will get thumbs-up from the audience in both the worlds,” adds Pawan, who is open to working with all Punjabi-singer actors, “Depending on the subject and, of course, the economics.” Here speaks a true producer!
