Jammu, September 7

Ridiculing the decision of the National Conference (NC) to boycott the urban local bodies and panchayat elections, former minister and Dogra Swabhiman Sangathan chairman Choudhary Lal Singh on Friday said the NC leadership has always sabotaged efforts to decentralise power.

“It is a fact the NC leadership has always bulldozed democratic institutions, be it urban local bodies or panchayats, at the grassroots level to ensure that the decision-making power remains in the hands of a few,” said Lal Singh while addressing a meeting of BJP workers in the Rampura area of the Gandhi Nagar Assembly segment.

The BJP MLA recalled that after breaking of the PDP-BJP alliance, the NC leaders had demanded dissolution of the Assembly for fresh elections. “If the NC was ready to contest Assembly elections then why is it opposing municipal and panchayat polls?”, he asked.

The former minister said the NC leaders were trying to befool the innocent people in the name of Article 35A but their real motive was to scuttle the move to empower democracy at the grassroots level.
