City residents never fail to welcome different food varieties entering the city.

This time there’s a new dessert in the city — rolled ice cream, which is popular in the streets of Thailand. However, India and so as Jalandhar has made this Thai import its own and rechristened it as Tawa ice cream.

Available at the two main places in the city at Model Town and Adarsh Nagar Chaupati, these ice cream roll-ups are trending this summer and are adding different flavours to one’s taste.

“Unlike the typical ice cream scoop, these roll-ups are a sweet concoction of pure frozen delight. Moreover, we always look for something new and this Tawa ice cream and smoke biscuits are making us go crazy as they not only offer good taste but also adds colours to our Snapchat and Instagram stories too,” said Manveer Singh, a Class XI student.

Karandeep Singh (31), owner of the Love at First Sight — the Live Tawa ice cream shop in Adarsh Nagar, has gained cooking expertise from the renowned chefs of Malaysia and Thailand. He has also worked in Dubai for more than five years and returned last year.He said, “I am very fond of travelling. I have been to different parts of the world. At first, I learnt this art of rolled ice cream from Thailand many years back. As the things did not work in my favour here in Jalandhar, I decided to migrate to Dubai and started working there as a chef. In the start of 2017 when I went to Delhi to attend some function, I saw this Thai rolled ice cream at a shop getting a great response.”

“After returning from Delhi, the next day itself I started planning and preparing to launch my own stall here, naming it Live Tawa ice cream. It has been only four months and I am happy as residents are liking it,” he adds.As the name suggests, the Tawa ice cream is made upon tawa wherein the frozen ice cream is beaten on a tawa, infused with nuts, spices and berries, and rolled up before serving.

While offering a variety of flavours like Oreo, guava, pineapple, and strawberry, black forest and black-currant, it offers chocolate flavour with lots of chocolate chips sprinkled on top, and the guava is served with a sprinkle of salt and chilli powder.Meanwhile, in the smoke biscuit, a slice of biscuit is dipped in liquid nitrogen and as the customer puts it in mouth, smoke starts pouring out. The heat in your body will cause the liquid nitrogen becoming gas and the biscuit will taste too cold and dry and not harmful to your body unlike raw liquid nitrogen which can kill you if drunk.
