With round turbans tied on their heads and sporting Sanjo (a steel ornament) on their foreheads, around 40 girls from five colleges across Punjab showed their valour and agility as they participated in gatka competition organised by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) at Nankana Sahib School near here.
Playing with open swords, shields, wooden sticks, nagini, barchha and chakar jaal, girls from Guru Hargobind Sahib Khalsa Girls College, Patiala; Sant Baba Dalip Singh Khalsa College, Domeli; Guru Nanak College for Girls, Muktsar; Bhai Sangat Singh Khalsa College, Banga; and Sahib Kaur Girls College, Talwandi Sabo participated in the event.
Doing away with the traditional navy blue dress usually worn by gatka teams, the girls came dressed in colourful kurtas and pyjamis making combinations of yellow and white and saffron and blue. Tying dupattas on their waists, they leaped while making moves and flashed a confident smile on their faces. Even boys donned various ornaments, especially ‘chand tora’ (shape of a moon and a dagger) on their ‘dumallas’ (round turbans).
The eight boys’ teams that participated in the event were from Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib; Sri Guru Hargobind Ji Gatka Akhara Ratna, Ludhiana; Guru Kashi Gurmat Institute, Talwandi Sabo; Mata Sundari Gatka Akhara, Bathinda; Shaheed Sikh Missionary College, Amritsar; Anhad Gatka Akhara, Kapurthala; Baba Bidhi Chand Sahib Gatka Akhara, Amritsar; and Shiromani Gatka Akhara from Valla, Amritsar.
