Activists condemn arrest of protesting teachers in Mohali
Jalandhar, July 6
Activists of the Education Provider Union today condemned the crackdown and arrest of teachers of the union by the police in Mohali. Union activists said while the protests had been going on for the past many months, the teachers were silently protesting for their rights.
As many as 300 teachers of the union had been arrested in Mohali a day ago. While the union’s tent was uprooted by the police late in the night, the teachers were later arrested. A few days ago, teachers of the union had also received termination notices because of their protests. Activists said instead of addressing the demands and grievances of the teachers, the government was putting them in jails. They said the teachers had been adjusting with meagre salaries for the past many years. District president of the union, Kuldip Singh, said while the government had failed to pay heed to the union’s demands, the union would intensify its agitation in the coming days. — TNS
