A Gandhian, Upender Singh Goindi (94), who donned only khadi all his life, breathed his last at his residence in Industrial Area on Tuesday.
People who have known Goindi have said he had charkha at his place and used it himself to weave the cloth and remained an active member at Khadi Mandal in Adampur near here. Since the age of 12 till his end, he was so particular about wearing only khadi that his eye specialist son Dr Tajinder Singh Goindi used to arrange for his khadi socks from New Delhi.
Born in September 1924, Goindi spent earlier years of his life in Allahabad before moving to Punjab during 1984 riots. He reportedly drew motivation from his father Bhagwan Singh Goindi, who quit his job of a gazetted officer in Dehradun after deciding not to work under the Britishers.
Around the same time, Goindi too chose home schooling to avoid English schools but later did MA-Economics from Panjab University. His son Dr Tajinder Goindi said, “Though my father had a role in the freedom struggle, he decided not to take ‘Tamar Patar’ for seeking any benefit”.
His cremation was held yesterday and bhog will be performed at a gurdwara in the Industrial Area on Saturday.
