Valley girl’s solution for hunger problems gets her award in Germany

Sanna Nazir, a 22-year-old student from south Kashmir, has bagged the prestigious GESS Award in Germany for her innovative idea to solve the problems of hidden hunger in the world.

Sanna, an engineering student from south Kashmir’s Qazigund, has been volunteering with different social entrepreneurship projects in Delhi and was the only participant from India to take part in the competition in Munich, Germany, were participants from 35 countries gave their ideas. Sanna bagged the first prize where she proposed for a product that can be used to overcome the hunger problems in the world in the long run.

“The theme for the summer school idea was global food challenges and I, along with a team of five members, gave a final pitch to the panel of judges and our idea won the first prize,” said Sanna, who gave the representation before the judges.

Sanna is pursuing her BTech from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in Dwarka, New Delhi, in electronics and communication and she gives the credit of her success to her parents.

“My parents always supported me. My father is a surgeon and my mother is working in government sector. They have had their struggles in achieving what they wanted to and now, they are helping me to pursue my dream,” says Sanna, who wants to open a school in Kashmir in future as a part of her journey to carry on the social entrepreneurship dream. The programme, ‘Billion Dollar Project to Foster Social Change’, at Global Entrepreneurship Summer School in Munich was looking for innovative ideas to overcome food challenges around the globe from participants from different corners and cultures.

“We presented the idea about a product that can be used as a supplement to solve the hidden hunger problems like anemia. Our product will solve the problem in the long run. It can be used as a supplement in the developed countries,” she said.

“The idea is to create a sustainable social business that solves the problem of hidden hunger without having to take donations and grants from people again and again,” Sanna added.
