Chandigarh, March 6

Even as AAP rebel leader Sukhpal Khaira has been claiming that he is the president of the newly announced Punjabi Ekta Party, the Election Commission records tell a different tale.

As per a public notice given in various newspapers, it is not Khaira who is president of the party, but one Sanakdip Singh of Faridkot.

According to insiders, it can be Khaira’s bid to save his membership in Punjab Legislative Assembly. He has already been served a notice by the Speaker since he has resigned from AAP after being elected on its ticket. So if he leaves the party, he has to resign from the Assembly also.

When contacted, Khaira admitted that as per the documents submitted to the Election Commission, Sanakdeep was the president. “It is just a technical issue. The fact is that Sanakdip Sandhu of Faridkot applied for registration of the party being its president and subsequently, I was appointed ad hoc president. Once the process of registration is complete our volunteers will elect me as president and the ECI will be duly informed about the change of office-bearers. There’s nothing illegal or wrong about it.”

After his removal from the post of Leader of Opposition by AAP last year, Khaira along with several AAP MLAs had parted ways with AAP and formed a new political outfit.
