Karnal, April 18
The Karnal jail, famous for correctional works for inmates, is taking a lead by establishing a ‘gaushala’ on its premises. The work on the ambitious project is in progress on a war footing.
The ‘gaushala’ is expected to be functional by the end of May. With this, the Karnal jail will be the first in the state to have a ‘gaushala’.
The Haryana Police Housing Corporation has been working on this project, aimed at using surplus land. The foundation stone was laid by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on May 3 last year.
“The project, which will cost around Rs2.5 crore, will have a capacity of 200 cows. We started work on December 18. We are hopeful of completing it before May 31,” said Sanjeev Verma, Executive Engineer, Haryana Police Housing Corporation.
“The ‘gaushala’ is being constructed on the rear of the jail. It will contribute to constructive use of inmates’ time. A fodder shed and a boundary wall are being constructed,” said Sher Singh, Jail Superintendent.
He said the cow shed was about to be completed. He said this step might lead to a change of heart among prisoners. He said they would not buy cows, but take these from other ‘gaushalas’ and bring stray cattle as well.
