A large number of fish died in a pond in Mirchpur village of the district. Several head of cattle have also fallen ill after drinking water from the pond in the past two months.

Satyawan, sarpanch of the village, said, “Several buffaloes died recently after drinking water from the pond. Officials from the Fisheries Department visited the village today to take stock of the situation.” He said the panchayat had let out the pond to a contractor for fish farming.

Dhup Singh Sindhu, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry Department, said there were complaints of haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) known as ‘galghotu’ and foot and mouth disease (FMD) in cattle about a month and a half ago. But the cattle were vaccinated and there was no such problem now, he said.
