Five persons lost their lives in various fire incidents in the past one week. Still, the authorities have done nothing to prevent such mishaps.

“Though the authorities claimed to have launched a drive, they are yet to start a survey to prepare an audit safety report,” said Ajay Bahl, an RTI activist.

Blaming it on the sluggish work, Bahl has sought a report of the work. The district has over 500 schools. He said the recent fire incidents, which claimed the lives of five persons, including three members of a family residing in a school in Dabua Colony here, had failed to pull the authorities out of their slumber.

Bahl has shot off an RTI application to the District Education Officer (DEO), seeking details of the safety audit done so far in the district.

Bahl said the fire incident at the Surat coaching institute on May 24 should have been an eye-opener. “I am still awaiting the RTI reply on fire safety in 100 coaching institutions in the city,” said Bahl, who had submitted his query on May 25.

Claiming no laxity, DEO Satender Kaur said a team, headed by Joint Director Dilbagh Singh, visited Dabua school on Tuesday. She said a report would be submitted by Friday and inspection of fire-safety norms in all private and government schools would be completed soon.
