The State Vigilance Bureau (SVB) has arrested Deputy Director Rajender Singh Sangwan and accountant-cum-clerk Surender Kumar of the Department of Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes in connection with the post-matric scholarship fraud case in the state.
The SVB produced the accused before the Rohtak District and Sessions Court today and sought a 10-day police remand for them, but the court remanded the accused in police custody for four days.
Sangwan’s lawyer RC Dalal said the accused would be produced before court on September 16. Sangwan had applied for the grant of anticipatory bail recently, but his plea was dismissed by the Rohtak court.
DSP (SVB) Tahir Hussain submitted before the court that Surender used to commit irregularities, which were in Sangwan’s notice. He said both officials had confessed to their involvement in the fraud and admitted having received bribes, with which they purchased property at Hisar, Panipat, Chandigarh and other places.
He further stated that as per the statement given by Surender, who was posted at the office of the District Welfare Officer, Sonepat, the corrupt practices went on from 2015-16 to 2018-19.
The DSP maintained that four persons, namely Arvind, Rahul, Teja and Naveen, who used to run coaching centres in different towns, were also involved in the fraud case and had to be arrested.
