After a humiliating loss in the Assembly elections, Bharatiya Kisan Union (Charuni) chief Gurnam Singh Charuni has resigned from his post. He had contested as an Independent candidate from Ladwa and managed to garner just 1,307 votes (0.95 per cent) out of 1,37,763 votes polled.
Congress candidate Mewa Singh has won from Ladwa.
Besides Charuni, union’s spokesman Rakesh Bains has resigned from his post as both farmers’ leaders were disappointed with the result.
Charuni and Bains have been raising farmers’ issues, and leading agitations against non-payment to sugarcane farmers, Dadupur Nalvi canal and non-procurement of sunflower seeds.
Charuni Singh said, “The result has proved that people vote on caste lines. For them, the plight of farmers and the poor are non-issues. I accept my decision of contesting the elections was wrong. So, I have resigned from my post.”
BKU (Charuni) acting president Karam Singh Mathana said, “The BKU leadership has decided to give them (Charuni and Bains) some time. We will approach them next month and appeal to them to change their decision.”
