Wonders out of waste

Nek Chand, the man behind Chandigarh’s iconic Rock Garden, is no more, but his thoughts and memories continue to linger. Rock Garden exemplifies the fact that when it comes to imagination and creativity, boundaries cease to operate. On the same lines — of metamorphosing unused waste objects into artistic delights — sisters, Kommal and Narita Wadhera, struck by the ‘art bug’ have joined hands with an aim of showcasing the ‘latent’ creative streak of city people.
Use it up
If you are contemplating disposing your wobbly tables, unused kitchen crockery and soiled curtains; give that thought a rest! Let your child-like imagination come into play and design regular items in a brand new avatar. Says Narita, an expert interior decorator, in city to hold an interactive craft workshop, “Don’t throw away unused items. Instead, use them in an innovative manner. You can repaint your old curtains, bed-spreads and even aprons to give them a new look.”
Agrees her sister Kommal Wadhera, an expert textile designer, “Why shell out money on home accessories when you can make the unused objects a canvas to unleash your creativity? Plus, this way you can inject your own unique style into your house.”
Creative streak
Giving old articles a new lease of life is what these two like; they echo, “Recreating things creatively is a passion that blossomed into a profession. Born and raised in the City Beautiful, Nek Chand’s creation Rock Garden always intrigued us. With that thought in mind, we took to putting the otherwise redundant household objects to good use.”
During the workshop, the duo showcased their creativity by giving old jars an artistic look by splashing them with colour and designing old glass pieces into home decor items like coasters.
