The Ludhiana police have launched a massive anti-drug campaign in the Jagraon and surrounding villages. During the harvesting season, drugs are offered to farm labour as a routine practice.

The course of action has been initiated following the directions of Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ludhiana, SK Kalia.

Sources said DIG Kalia has given clear instruction to the rank and file in the police department to shun from registering cases just to inflate the number.

“It was witnessed in the past that police officer arrest drug addicts and posed them as drug peddlers in order to impress their seniors.

DIG Kalia while addressing a gathering during functions organised at Dhulkot and Pakhowal village urged the residents to inform the police about the drug peddling activity.

Kalia told the residents that they could contact him if they find involvement of any government employee or a cop in such activity.

Sarpanches and panches of villages falling under Jodhan and Sudhar villages, office bearers of Rotary Club Ahmedgarh, Lions Club, Social Welfare Organization, Zila Parishads, block Samitis and sports clubs vowed to support the movement launched by the state police against the menace of drug addiction which has since emerged as breeding bowl for many other social evils and crimes.

Responding to call made by cops led by DIG SK Kalia, activists assured to help the cops in identifying drug peddlers and anti-social elements prevalent in their respective areas. Activists assured that no one will be able to shield the suspects.

Showing satisfaction over response received from rank and file in the law enforcing agency and various sections of society Kalia said the beat officers have been directed to work in close coordination with the NGOs as a part of the anti drug campaign.

Chemists were warned against the selling of drugs which can be used as psychotropic and tranquilisers. Strict action will be taken against those who failed to comply with the rules and regulations, said Kalia.
