What is the scope for women bouncers in India?

Q. I have been learning judo and karate since Class IV. I am not very good in studies. Can being a woman bouncer considered as a career? — Kamini Singh

A. Although the bouncer’s job is to protect people wherever trouble is expected, please note that the bouncer is always unarmed. Physical strength is important in this line of work and the very look of the bouncer should be enough to prevent wrongdoing.

Women as bouncers have not just broken the proverbial glass ceiling in the country but are also rapidly grown in number as cautious event managers, concerned parents, and pub and restaurant owners all seek their services.

This has also prompted many fit middle-aged women from lower and middle class families to come out and work in the security field as female bouncers.

Security agents estimate that in the past two years alone, the number of women bouncers in India has increased four-fold to about 5,000. The number of female bouncers employed by NISA shot up from 200 to 800 in 2013 alone.

Unlike most other jobs that suffer from gender discrimination, in this profession, women often get paid more than men — their wages range from Rs 1,500-2,000 per shift plus conveyance compared to the Rs 800-1,200 offered to men. A typical shift can last 4-8 hours and as a woman bouncer, you can easily make Rs 20,000-35,000 p.m.

You can work for three kinds of security outfits:

  • Security Services for Corporates
  • Security for events – checking at gates, entrances etc
  • Security at Pubs, Bars to manage women guests

Female bouncers will be in great demand in the future. Already, more families are allowing their educated middle aged family members to be hired as female bodyguards with reputed companies in India — a very significant transformation in modern India.

While no specific training is required to be a bouncer, some security firms prefer retired personnel from CRPF, BSF and other defence / protective forces. The only training that female bouncers are given by the firm is related to body language and conduct. They’re also trained not to shove or be rude to clients and how to be firm, yet soft and polite --keeping in mind the kind of crowd that visits restaurants and pubs and resolve any tension among women customers in a smooth manner.

Can diploma holder get lateral entry in BArch?

Q. As in the case of BE/BTech courses, can diploma holders also take lateral entry into 2nd year of BArch?

— Lakhvinder Chawla

A. As far as I know, there is no provision for lateral entry in second year (or any other year) of the 5-year BArch course.

However, three-year diploma holders can seek admission to Year-1 of the BArch course, provided they have secured an aggregate of 50 per cent and cleared the NATA / JEE test.

The general eligibility for admission to BArch courses is Class XII with maths and a minimum aggregate of 50 per cent.

Unless a candidate has undergone the prescribed 5-year BArch course and cleared the NATA, s/he is not eligible for registration as an Architect with the Council of Architecture and consequently, cannot practice the profession of an architect in the country.

Registration with the COA is mandatory for seeking employment with Central/State Government and taking up teaching positions.
