Very rarely do we ever start a movie review from the screenplay writer of a film; this time however, we would like to make an exception. Jass Grewal, story and screenplay writer of the Punjabi film Bambukat, deserves a pat for putting together an innovative idea in the form of Punjabi film Bambukat!

In an equal measure, director Pankaj Batra also stands to share this bright moment for his fine direction. Since the film is meant for everyone and not strictly Punjabis (this is what Punjabi filmmakers claim these days), the chaste Punjabi words and dialogues will not be everyone’s cup of tea. How about sub-titles?

Coming to Bambukat, the film does remind us of Amrinder Gill-starrer Angrej because of its look, the characters, the chaste Punjabi, the marriage hulabaloo, the detailing of that time, and Anita Devgan...but it still scores its own points.

Though slightly lengthy, it has enjoyable frames from the beginning to the end. Let’s say it again, the art direction team has a done a great job of taking care of the detailing. The story of the film is interesting, which has been translated beautifully on screen by director Pankaj Batra. The film picks pace towards the end; being too melodramatic at this point, something we don’t mind for once.

If you look at the actors of Bambukat, one such artiste that stands to surprise you is Binnu Dhillon; this time in his turban, immaculate dressing and superb acting; he nails every bit of his character. Binnu plays the well-off brother-in-law of a family and he brings in all the elements - superiority and jealously to his character. Binnu Dhillon’s turbaned look makes him all the more likeable.

Ammy Virk is the actor who invents Bambukat in the film. Ammy for sure is a fantabulous singer, and has all the ingredients of being the next big actor if only he can control the motor-speed of his dialogue delivery. This affects the clarity of his delivery. Ammy does justice to his role, acting every inch as Chanan Singh of Bambukat. Well, this good-looking ‘sardarji’ is definitely here to stay...for long! Nirmal Rishi is another actor whom you can’t miss, even in a smallish role. This holds true for actor Karamjit Anmol as well. Simi Chahal and Sheetal Thakur are the two ladies of the film; both have managed to slip into their respective characters pretty well. Sardar Sohi, who was much appreciated in Angerj, is completely wasted in Bambukat.

The music is by Jatinder Shahm, which is another good thing; only there are too many songs in the film. Bambukat gives Punjabi cinema a new story for sure and this new invention gets a thumbs-up!
