2087 participate in Punjabi University sports wing trials
Patiala, April 20
As many as 2,087 sportspersons from all over the country participated in the trials for the sports wing of Punjabi University at Raja Bhalendra Singh Sports Complex of the university today.
The trials were conducted by the Sports Department of Punjabi University.
Out of the 2, 087 hopefuls, 1,248 were boys and 839 girls. Dr Rajkumar Sharma, Director Sports of the university, informed that a majority of the players had represented the country in various World Cups, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
Sportspersons this reporter talked with said that they wanted to join Punjabi University because of the availability of good infrastructure and equipment, air-conditioned accommodation, quality education and incentives like prize money.
Mandeep Kaur Sandhu, gold medallist at the Junior Boxing Championship held at Taipei (Taiwan) last year, has joined the university. She has been selected on the basis of her international performance.
Speaking on her, Sharma said: “She can share her experience with the other players, which will prove beneficial for them.” — TNS
