Meet on financial inclusion at Doon varsity

Doon University in collaboration with Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kashipur, organised a conference on “Financial Inclusion and Sustainable Livelihood” here today. The conference began with the lamp lighting ceremony by guests.
Dr Somnath Ghosh introduced the topic of the conference and talked about the new innovations in financial inclusion. The guest of honour, CP Mohan, CGM, NABARD, briefed the gathering about access of financial services in rural areas. He said, “There are around six lakh villages in India and about 57 per cent of them have a population below 1,000 and 80 per cent have population below 2,000 without any access to financial services.”
The chief guest, Dr MC Joshi, Secretary (Finance), Uttarakhand, laid stress on the importance of access to technology and technical problems in some areas in India. He said people living in urban areas still faced financial problems and took loans from other people rather than financial intermediaries like banks.
He stressed on finding the root cause of the problems related to sustainable livelihood. He said instead of suggestions and talks, actions and solutions should be achieved as soon as possible.
Basix financial company founder Vijay Mahajan explained financial inclusion in detail and the initiatives taken by the Central government in its promotion. Manab Chakraborty from IIM Kashipur moderated a panel discussion on the subject.
