Mussoorie, February 3
Landour residents held a candlelight march around the market here today in support of their demand for the construction of Clock Tower in the area. They said the Municipal Council demolished the old structure a long ago and had not initiated the new construction, hence leaving no option but to carry out a candle march in protest against the delay.
Considered as a heritage building, the residents went to the High Court thus leading to a delay of three years. The High Court later directed the MC to begin the reconstruction work, but the MC had not made no effort so far.
The residents said that the Clock Tower was an important landmark and heart of the town but the MC had shown no sensitivity in the matter. MC president Manmohan Singh Mall had promised during the elections that he would start the reconstruction of the Clock Tower but all proved false, the residents said. When contacted MC president Mall said the Clock Tower reconstruction was his priority and the delay in the architectural design was the main reason behind it. He said once the design was finalized, the MC would start the construction of the building. Meanwhile, traders have threatened to begin an indefinite hunger strike if the work on the Clock Tower was not started soon.
MC member Beena Panwar, traders Anat Pal Singh, Pappu, Ravi Goyal, Jai Kishan, Arun Kumar Verma and Anurag Rastogi took part in the march.
