New Delhi, February 15
The Delhi High Court today rejected the parole plea of INLD leader Ajay Singh Chautala, serving a 10-year sentence in Tihar Jail here for his role in the teachers’ recruitment scam in 1999-2000 when his father OP Chautala was Chief Minister of Haryana.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath refused to order Ajay Singh’s release on parole for four weeks on health grounds. On February 1, the HC had granted a four-week parole to 82-year-old OP Chautala, who is also serving a 10-year term in the case, on medical grounds.
The SC had refused to entertain the two INLD leaders’ appeals against their conviction for committing irregularities in the recruitment of 3,032 junior basic trained (JBT) teachers. They filed review petitions following this. The petitions were slated for a decision on January 20, 2016, but this has been deferred at their instance. They have pleaded for permission to file revised review petitions. On January 22, 2013, a trial court here had sentenced 55 accused in the case. Among those convicted were 82-year-old Chautala’s then political adviser Sher Singh Badshami, the then OSD Vidya Dhar, IAS, and then Primary Education Director Sanjiv Kumar, IAS, besides 50 others.
