Aakriti Suri from Vivek High School, Sector 38, here, has been named for the Kurt Hahn Prize-2015, an international award for the community service for the welfare of the underprivileged women. There were a total of nine entries for the prize.

Aakriti, a Class XII student from Vivek High School, visited slums near her hometown, Parwanoo (Himachal Pradesh), to spread awareness on women’s sanitation and hygiene.

“I came across an article on low-cost sanitary napkin-making machine and decided to set up the machine at my hometown with my pocket money,” said Aakriti.

Aakriti said: “At present, we have two machines, which enable us to provide employment to eight economically weaker women. The machine provides biodegradable sanitary napkins at a reduced cost of 60 per cent from regular ones”.

Under the project, Aakriti also conducted several awareness campaigns in the nearby schools and slums.

Aakriti Suri will receive the award in Singapore during the round square international conference to be held in October.
