The body of gangster Sukha Kahlwan, who was killed near Phagwara last week while in police custody, was cremated amid tight security at his native village Kahlwan near Kartarpur today.

At least 150 policemen from three police stations at Lambra, Maqsudan and Kartarpur were deployed at all five entries to the village. The entire village was cordoned off. All those who came for the cremation were frisked by the police.

Sukha’s mother Harjinder Kaur demanded the arrest of the killers and compensation for the death of both her sons while in police custody.

“My elder son died of jaundice at the Kapurthala Modern Jail seven months ago. No treatment was provided to him. Sukha was killed in custody owing to serious police lapses. The government should provide us monetary compensation and ensure the arrest of the assailants,” Harjinder Kaur said.

Sudarshan Singh, Sukha’s father, demanded action against the medical team that conducted Sukha’s post-mortem at the Phagwara Civil Hospital on January 22. “How come pictures of the post-mortem have gone viral on the net,” he asked. Meanwhile, the police have detained 100 persons for questioning in the last two days.
