The Haryana Government today awarded Rs 3 lakh in compensation to a family attacked in Dhingeri village of Tauru in Mewat on Wednesday night and gave a job to a child whose parents were killed in the attack.

A couple was beaten to death and two of their relatives — a woman and a minor — allegedly gang-raped after being held hostage by five armed robbers in Dhingeri village on Wednesday night.

PWD Minister Rao Narbir Singh and Sohna MLA Tejpal Tanwar gave the cheque for Rs 3 lakh when they visited a medical college in Mewat to meet the gang rape survivors and members of the family. Rao Narbir promised support to the family.

BSP leader Javed Ahemad gave Rs 2.5 lakh each to affected families, while another BSP leader Naresh Saran gave Rs 50,000.

The compensation, however, failed to impress both villagers and Opposition.

Congress leader Capt Ajay Yadav told the media today Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar took the incident “lightly”.

“The attack is unprecedented. Neither Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit Singh nor Khattar has time to visit the family. What is Rs 3 lakh? It will not even cover the cost of rehabilitating rape survivors. They should be given at least Rs 20 lakh. The accused should be punished severely to set an example,” Yadav said.

The villagers convened a meeting today and drew up a security plan for themselves. They sought action against the accused in two days and transfer of the DSP.

“Nobody in village has slept after the incident. Every noise scares us to death. Had the DSP had been vigilant, the incident would not have happened. The KMP expressway nearby is dark and hub of anti-social elements,” said a panchayat member.

He added, “We are taking turns to patrol the village at night. During the day, women and children do not venture out. We have asked all villagers to keep burn lanterns.”

Inspector General Mamta Singh is staying put in the village. The five accused were reportedly rounded up and let off after questioning.
