Blood donation a tradition at PAU

Students of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) began a noble tradition for last several years. Hostel inmates at the PAU are available for the blood donation 24x7. The blood donor activists in campus have prepared lists of students, who are keen to donate blood in case of emergency.

As the PAU is located near to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, a large number of attendants visit PAU to arrange blood for their kith and kin. Most of the times staff at the DMCH guide them to visit PAU to arrange blood. There are some student’s groups associated with NGOs play active role but some students donate blood and arrange donors individually.

Gurpreet Singh Gogi from Hostel No 7 has been donating and arranging blood for the patients for last four years.

“During my graduation, I use to donate blood in college at Bathinda. When I reached PAU, some senior students were active to arrange blood donation campus and help the emergency patients by arranging blood for them. I have donated blood 13 times and gave platelets for dengue five times. I have a list of donors and when any persons visit our hostel to get blood I send someone along with him.”

Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, Social Worker’s Association, PAU voluntary Blood Donors Association and Young Writers Association often arrange blood donation camps in the university campus. The students and employees donate average 350 unit blood in every camp.

Gurloveleen Singh Rana Sandhu, an M.Sc Agriculture Extension student said, “Being students of a science university, everyone is aware about the benefits of donating blood. After the outbreak of dengue diseases in region demand of platelets was quite frequent. The students never hesitate to give blood or platelets to needy patients. The rural youth residing in the hostels always come forward to this noble cause. Moreover the girl students never stay behind and donate blood in campus”.

Manpreet Singh Kataria, a regular blood donor said, “It is a tradition of PAU. Our seniors used to donate blood. We started donating and now juniors also donate”.

Not only student some employees such as Gurbakhs Singh from Soli Science department is a renowned blood donation activist. Harjit Singh Bapla a student was awarded with best blood donor by Social Worker’s Association.
