Jammu, February 18
A sharp increase in the population of dogs is due to the faulty and unscientific methodology being followed by the agency conducting ABC/ARV programme in Jammu city.
This was stated by Rumpy Madaan, chairperson, Save Animal Value Environment (SAVE), who has taken up the cause of prevention of cruelty against animals in Jammu.
Madaan, who recently conducted a workshop entitled ‘First aid for neighbourhood animals’ at GGM Science College, Jammu, said her team alone could not provide a holistic care to animals. It requires contribution of society and government also,” she said.
During the workshop, the SAVE team distributed medical kits to students and gave an overview of the works undertaken by the NGO.
“The Animal Birth Control (ABC)/Anti-Rabies Vaccination (ARV) Programme was started in March 2017 by the Jammu Municipal Corporation in collaboration with agency ‘Nanded SPCA’ from Maharashtra. There have been complaints about unknown dogs in some localities but it is being ignored by the authorities,” said Madaan.
The corporation is not taking the matter seriously,” she said, maintaining it had not followed certain directives issued bythe Supreme Court regarding the birth controlof stray dogs.
As per the Supreme Court guidelines, all state Municipal Corporations, committees, district boards and local bodies have to be guided by the Act and the rules and it is the duty and obligation of the Animal Welfare Board of India to see that they are followed.
