The Khalsa College Governing Council (KCGC) prefers to follow a wait and watch policy over Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s move to review the Act, under which Khalsa University came into being.
Capt Amarinder has been opposing the conversion of Khalsa College to a private university in the vicinity of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU). He also wants to undo any attempt to tinker with the heritage status of 330-acre Khalsa College campus, established by leaders of the Singh Sabha Movement in 1892.
He had said the Congress would reverse the decision if voted to power in 2017.
Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina, KCGC honorary secretary and university’s Pro-Chancellor, said the university was an independent entity, separate from the iconic Khalsa College housed in the main heritage building. “Khalsa College will continue to function as an autonomous institute under the UGC with its structure preserved as it is. To establish Khalsa University was an ambitious project with no political motive,” Chhina added.
