RIMC wins Hugh Catchpole English debate contest

Sixteen reputed schools from across the country participated in the 11th Hugh Catchpole English Debates 2016 held at Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) here today. The RIMC, Dehradun, emerged victorious.

In preliminary round Arnav Sharma of St George’s College Mussoorie and Cadet Animesh Chug of RIMC stood out as the best speakers.

After eight teams—four winners each from pool A and pool B—had reached the semi-finals, the losing teams were given another bite at the cherry in the second phase of the preliminary round to battle it out and finish as the top two teams.

In the final round, four teams won their place were RIMC, The Doon School, St. George’s College Mussoorie and La Martiniere College for Girls, Lucknow. Cadet Watandeep Singh Siddhu of the RIMC was declared the best speaker.

Chief guest of the final round of debate, Brigadier YS Bisht, Commandant Military Hospital, Dehradun, appreciated the debating skills of the participants and urged all young students not to succumb to circumstances and to maintain their moral fiber in difficult situations.

Concluding the programme, head of the institution Colonel Vivek Sharma, Commandant RIMC, extended his heartfelt gratitude to all and sundry who contributed directly or indirectly to the programme.

The moment eclipsed all others was the rare show of generosity by the RIMC. It played the perfect host by handing over the trophy to friendly neighbour the Doon School which came second best.
