Mohindra college to celebrate 142nd founder’s day today

Government Mohindra College, the oldest institution of contemporary learning in Northern India, will celebrate its 142nd founder’s day on March 30.
Lord Northbrook, the then Viceroy of India, laid the foundation stone of the college building on March 30, 1875. The building was completed in about nine years.
Lord Ripon, the then Viceroy of India, performed the opening ceremony on March 17, 1884. At the time of its inception, it was the only institution of its kind in a vast area stretching from Lahore to Delhi.
Initially, the college was affiliated to Calcutta University and imparted free education to state subjects till 1937. In recognition of its contribution to higher learning, the Government of India issued a commemorative stamp on Mohindra College on March 14, 1988. The state government adjudged the institute as one of the four model colleges of the state.
The college is the only government college in Punjab that has been accredited with A+ grade by the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC). It has also got the coveted “College with Potential for Excellence” by the University Grants Commission. It was adjudged as the Star College in Life Sciences by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, in 2009. A community college has also been allotted to the institute by the UGC to impart skill-oriented courses to the students of the region.
