Kolkata school boys win debate

La Martiniere Boys School, Kolkata, beat hosts Bishop Cotton School (BCS) to win the finals of the XXII Revd Samuel Slater Memorial Inter-School English Debates.

The two teams debated on the topic “Hacktivist organisations like the Anonymous should be legalised by the United Nations.” The La Martiniere team, led by Pulak Taneja, beat the BCS team led by Ranvir Singh. Justice Tarlok Chauhan was the Chief Guest.

The trophy for the overall best speaker was won by Pulak Taneja from La Martiniere Boys School. The trophy for the second best Speaker was shared by Ranvir Singh and Dhruv Sood from BCS.

La Martiniere Boys School has won the debate thrice in a row in 2012, 2013 and 2014. They have won the debates for a record number on seven occasions, followed by Doon School on four occasions. However, the winner of the debate in 2016 was Sri Ram School, Gurgaon.

A total of 16 teams are participating in the debates. The participating schools include Sherwood School, Nainital, La Martiniere Boys College, Lucknow, Scindia School, Gwalior, Doon School, Dehradun, Mayo College Girls, Ajmer, Loreto House, Kolkata, La Martiniere Girls, Kolkata, Auckland House School, Shimla, Sri Ram School, Gurgaon, Vasant Valley School, New Delhi, La Martiniere Boys, Kolkata, RIMC, Dehradun, Pinegrove School, Kasauli, Lawrence School, Sanawar, Neerja Modi School, Jaipur, and Bishop Cotton School, Shimla.

It was in 1995 that Headmaster of BCS Kabir K Mustafi felt the need to bring about an inter-public school debating exchange spread over a period of four days to facilitate friendship, exchange of views and ideas.
