IIT to focus on industrial research

The Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi, will focus on getting funds for industry-related research and development projects. Of the Rs 30 crore funds received by the institute last year, at least 10 crore were spent on industry-related research.
Prof TA Gonsalves, Director, IIT, said, “In pursuit of our vision to work for society, our faculty took up research and development projects with industry. Last year, Prof Ashok Jhunjhunwala launched the IIT Mandi Catalyst, our technology business incubator.”
He said Rs 9 crore were sanctioned for industry-oriented R&D projects under the UAY and IMPRINT schemes in 2016, adding this year the focus would be to serve society through academic endeavors.
IIT to empower women of Kamand
The institute has started a project to help empower women through EWOK — Enabling Women of Kamand. The project has been started by faculty and campus residents under the aegis of IIT Women’s Centre to help women in the Kamand Valley by training them in knitting, sewing, and helping set up small enterprises.
Environment conservation
To encourage students towards environment conservation, the IIT authorities planted trees and shrubs in the vicinity of Kamand.
Bicycle club started
To promote eco-friendly transportation, the IIT started a bicycle club to encourage youth to adopt eco-friendly transportation system to reduce air pollution. The main motive was to generate awareness on rising pollution from diesel vehicles.
IIT Mandi ranked sixth
The Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi, was ranked number six number among all the IITs by Nature, one of the top scientific journals in the world. The journal tracks high-quality scientific articles published across the globe with monthly updates.
R-Day celebrated with fervour
The 68th Republic Day was celebrated at the IIT with enthusiasm. Prof TA Gonsalves, Director, IIT, hoisted the national flag and elaborated on the role of IITs in nation building.
