Aman Kachroo Day not observed

Waking up to the seriousness of ragging in educational institutes following the Aman Kachroo incident, the state government approved the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Ragging) Ordinance, 2009, banning ragging within or outside the premises of all educational institutions and the Cabinet also approved the setting up of Aman Kachroo Memorial Trust with a corpus of Rs 50 lakh to undertake activities among students in particular and civic society in general to institutionalise zero tolerance to ragging.

Aman Kachroo (19), who passed out of DPS International in Saket and enrolled at the Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, in Kangra died on March 8, 2009, following ragging and four medical students were later on sentenced for the crime. The Principal and the Chief Warden were suspended by the government after the incident.

Aman Kachroo Trust started working from the DRPGMC and Aman Kachroo Day was being observed on March 8 every year to create awareness among students of the ragging menace.

It was for the first time yesterday that the day was not observed ignoring the interests of students. Principal Dr Romesh Bharti said students were reluctant and Anti-ragging Committee secretary Dr Parveen Sharma knew more about the issue.
