Martyrs’ Day holds special meaning and importance for the people of Rao village of Yamunanagar district, who pay tributes to the heroes of the freedom struggle in their own way. The villagers have raised the ‘Inquilab’ Temple in the village, where they have placed statues of martyrs.

Statues of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Udham Singh and Lala Lajpat Rai have been installed at the temple and villagers worship them like gods. They assemble at the temple every evening to pay homage to them with flowers and a salute.

“To pay homage to the great heroes of the nation, we hold a special programme on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day every year,” said Waryam Singh, state president of the Anti-Corruption Society which has constructed it.

Waryam said they had planned construction of the temple in 2005, but the construction work started in 2007 after the then village sarpanch gave them a piece of panchayat land for the purpose. “The temple is being constructed with the help of people without government help and it will be complete by 2018,” he said.

Malkiyat Singh, a class VII student, said children of the village had learnt about the life of most of the martyrs in the course of temple construction.
