Wheat crop destroyed in fire

At least 160 bighas of standing wheat crop belonging to Jandali Kalan and Baurhai Kalan villages, near here, was reduced to ashes in a fire on Sunday. It is suspected that sparking in loose or defective power cables triggered the fire. The Revenue Department is assessing the loss caused to farmers. The fire could have engulfed a few houses and a rice sheller if a group of youngsters had not cut the crop standing between the fields on fire and the buildings. The fire brigade of Shryans Paper Mill was pressed into service. OC

1,544 liquor bottles seized

The BRS Nagar police have arrested a bootlegger and recovered 1,544 bottles of liquor. He has been identified as Brij Mohan, a resident of BRS Nagar. The police said acting on a tip-off, a raid was conducted at the house of the accused and liquor was recovered from him. TNS

7 held for immoral trafficking

The Sarabha Nagar police have arrested seven people for immoral trafficking. They have been identified as Sarwan Kumar, Paramjit Kaur, Gurdeep Singh, Avtar Singh, Satvir Singh, Preeti and Khushi. The police said a tip-off was received that the accused had gathered at a hotel near the bus stand and accordingly the police conducted a raid and the accused were arrested red-handed.  TNS

2 arrested with stolen goods

The Daresi police have arrested two thieves and recovered stolen goods and a motorcycle from them. They have been identified as Naveen Sharma of Janakpuri and Jaspreet Singh of Dhonka mohalla. They were arrested from Dabour market. Apart from the bike, the police also recovered 20 pair of readymade dresses of children. TNS

House burgled in Baldev Nagar

A house was burgled in Baldev Nagar. Complainant Shiv Dyal said they had gone to Pathankot to solemnise the marriage of their daughter and when they returned, they found the main lock broken and the entire house ransacked. Thieves took away an Activa scooter, an LED, two pair of earrings and some other valuables from home. The police have been scanning the CCTV footages to identify the miscreants. TNS

Bike, Rs 18,000 snatched 

Two unidentified persons snatched a bike and cash from a youth. Complainant Mukesh Kumar of Sahnewal told the police that on April 14, he was going to his place on his bike when he was stopped by two unidentified persons near Harnampura canal. The moment he stopped his bike, the two men pounced on him and snatched his bike and Rs 18,000 cash. They also threatened him with dire consequences if he informed the police. The police have started investigation into the case. TNS

Immigrants ‘ number  down 

The number of immigrants coming to settle in the district from Himachal Pradesh is going down as more industries are being set up in the hill state. Immigrant families from Himachal celebrated the 48th annual event of Himachal Prantiya Sabha on Sunday.  Pawan Sharma, president of the organsiation, said there were around 7 lakh Himachali immigrants in Punjab and around 3 lakh were settled in Ludhiana. Sharma said earlier the number of immigrants who were coming to settle in the industrial city was more, but with more employment opportunities in Himachal, the number of youths coming to settle here had nearly halved.
